Halloween Garland

As the days grow shorter and a cool breeze begins to fill the air, there’s nothing quite like bringing some seasonal magic indoors. Today, we’re going to create a Halloween paper garland that adds playful charm to your space.

Whether you’re planning a cozy gathering or simply looking to enjoy the spirit of the season, this handmade project is a delightful project to try.

This garland is simple to make and requires just a few materials. Most importantly, it’s a fun activity for all ages, allowing you to enjoy crafting together with the whole family if you choose to!

What You’ll Need:

  • Scissors: I like this model for its sharpness and size, but truly, any pair that feels comfortable in your hand and suits your budget will do the job beautifully. If you’re crafting with little ones, though, rounded-tip scissors are a safer choice.

  • A hole punch (I used this model with the 2mm tip) or a needle for threading the garland.

  • Thread: For this project, I used 1mm baker’s twine in black, though any thin string will work as long as it fits smoothly through the holes in the garland. If you opt for nylon cord, you’ll find it resists fraying and can be melted at the ends with a lighter for easier threading. With cotton twine, simply wrap a bit of tape around the ends to prevent fraying and ease the threading process.

  • Optional: Tape to hang up your finished work. (Washi tape is a good choice because it’s easy to adjust, but regular tape is fine too.)

How to create your Halloween Garland - Step by Step

Step 1: Print the Design

Start by printing the design on slightly thicker cardstock, ideally A4 or letter-sized and around 160 gsm (grams per square meter). This thickness helps give the garland more structure. If you only have regular paper, that will work as well, although it will result in softer shapes.

Step 2: Cut Out the Shapes

Take your time cutting around the shapes. It’s often easiest to roughly outline them first, then go in for the finer details. Don’t be concerned if the cuts aren’t perfectly even—part of the charm of a Halloween paper garland is those little imperfections.

Step 3: Punch the Holes

Once your shapes are cut, use a 2mm hole punch or a needle to make small holes for threading. If you’d rather skip this step, you can tape the shapes directly to the string instead.

Step 4: String it All Together

Now, lay out your shapes in the order you like. Play around with the spacing until it looks just right to you. Once you’re happy with the arrangement, thread the shapes onto your string.

Step 5: Hang Your Garland

Your garland is ready to shine! Use a few small pieces of tape to hang it across a window, along a shelf, or on a wall. This Halloween paper garland will instantly bring a bit of sweet, spooky charm to your room.

And there you have it—a simple, handmade project that adds warmth and festive fun to your home. I hope you enjoy crafting it as much as I enjoyed sharing it with you. Embrace the imperfections, take your time, and let your creativity flow.

Happy crafting, and have a wonderfully spooky Halloween!
