How to Make Your Garland
Step 1: Download and Print
Start by downloading the PDF for the paper bird garland and print as many copies as you need. For a sturdier finish, choose cardstock around 160 gsm (90 lb) for the best results). If regular paper is what you have on hand, don’t worry—it lends a delicate, airy quality to the garland that’s equally charming.
Step 2: Cut Out the Birds
Next, carefully cut around each bird. Take your time; there’s something soothing about the process. A slight imperfection here or there adds to the handmade charm, making your garland feel all the more special.
Step 3: Punch Holes for Threading
Once the shapes are cut out, use a hole punch or needle to create small holes where marked. These will help the birds hang evenly on the string. If you don’t have a punch, a gentle poke with a needle works just as well—just be sure to handle with care.
Step 4: String the Birds Together
Now it’s time to arrange your flock. Lay out the birds in a way that feels right to you—I began with the largest to create a sense of movement, but you might prefer to alternate colors or sizes. Once you’re satisfied with the layout, thread the birds onto your string, leaving a bit of space between each for a natural flow.
Step 5: Display Your Garland
With your garland complete, it’s time to let it take flight. Drape it gracefully over a bookshelf, let it flutter by a window, or string it along a wall to bring a cheerful pop of color to your space.
A Few More Ideas
Your garland is ready to display, but if the mood strikes—or if you’d like to keep yourself or your little ones happily occupied a while longer—these simple shapes lend themselves beautifully to a bit of customisation. Here are some ideas to inspire you:
Add metallic accents: Use gold or silver markers to mimic feathers and bring a touch of sparkle.
Incorporate stickers: Tiny stars, hearts, or flowers can easily add charm and personality to your birds.
Draw patterns or doodles: Stripes, polka dots, or whimsical flourishes bring a playful and unique character.
Thread in beads: Add beads between the birds for a three-dimensional effect and a pop of colour.
Whether you leave your garland as it is or embellish it with these creative touches, I hope it brings you plenty of joy and a dash of handmade charm to your space.
